I got these drill bits in Germany. They are for three types of material: Wood, "Stein" (literally stone, meaning concrete and other hard materials), and plaster or sheetrock I think. But I don't know which is which. The HSS is light silver vs the black for the other two. The CV has a very sharp tip, which suggests the stone. There is plaster from previous uses on both the HSS and HM, but I guess even if you are drilling wood, you might start with plaster. or I made a mistake last time. I haven't used them in a decade and I've plumb forgot!

When I Google the acronyms, I at least get sites about drilling and cutting materials but I haven't managed to figure out what is what. (Acronym is the wrong word but I forget the right one)

Can anyone help?

I have a toolbox full of drill bits. How can I tell which ones are the carbide ones

How best to restock drill bits?

Hi, I'm an occasional DIYer and use up certain drill bits (< 1/4") through breakage and dulling. I have a big boxed assortment of drill accessories, including things that will probably last a lifetime, but those smaller drill bits keep thinning out.
What do you usually do, do you buy individual bits to replace them, do you buy entire sets, or are there other bulk offerings? Any advice on brand?

i have to drill or bore a 1 3/16 inch round hole (yes i said a 1 and 3/16 inch round hole)2 inchs deep into hard steel.i can not cut it with a torch.i been looking for titanium drill bits that are 1 3/16 round or larger and i can't find any drill bits that size, that are made for drilling into hard steel.

i looked all over locally and online.but i don't know exactly what i should be looking for?or useing to drill thru the steel.
i need to bore a 1 3/16 hole into a 7 inch round 20 pound gear 2 inchs thick hard steel after that the gear needs to be welded to a 1 3/16 or 1 1/8 drive shaft.this part goes to a engine.i talked to some welding shop and thay might do the job.
also my step dad works for csx and he has bits the size i need, but there shop drill press is broke.
it's made out off hardend pressed steel i think. its just said on the gear and box hardend steel gear.the gear allready has a hole in the center 3/4" all the way thru but i need the hole to be bigger to fit on the drive shaft.

I bought myself a door frame mounted pull-up bar, but here's the problem... My door frame is made out of solid steel. I have a set of Black & Decker drill bits I bought at Home Depot, and they are advertised on the package to be "General Purpose". It says they will drill through metal, wood, etc... but in reality, they just get hot, and lick against the tough steel, not being able to drill even half an inch through! Honestly I don't know what kind of drill bits I need for the task at hand. Where can I get what I need? What are such drill bits called? Can someone give me a link? I'd like to order online because Home Depot sales reps are rude, and unhelpful.

I borrowed a drill of someone. it is a dewalt drill 18v.
He gave me 3 drill bits... 5mm 6mm and 8mm.... one broke... all it says on the drill bit is 'sds plus' and numbers (presuming about how big the drill bit is).
i want to replace the drill bit but dont know what with.
What is the best make for drill bits??
help? advice? anything? plz!!!

left hand drill bits?

right so i bought some left hand drill bits and some easy out extractors to get a bolt out that was broken off in my engine block. anyways though left hand drill bits are hard to find. and lowes sell the kit with right hand bits but left hand extractors. so im wondering if i could just use right hand bits with my extractors or do they really have to be left hand??

I'm using one of my wisdom teeth in a piece of art I'm working on. I'm hoping to drill a very small hole through the center of the tooth so I can string it on wire. So far I've tried diamond head drill bits and been unsuccessful.

Do large, rusty drill bits have any value?

My late father owned a machine shop. He had several boxes of huge drill bits - some are over a foot long and maybe two inches in diameter. But they haven't been used in years and are now a bit rusty. Do they have any value beyond scrap steel? Is it too much trouble for someone to clean and sharpen them, etc. ?

I've tried using hardened drill bits but they wont cut the glass. When I apply pressure the bottle breaks.
