Titanium bits are just coated, so if you sharpen them, they're not as good as new. Are cobalt bits the same way, or are they made of a homogeneous substance rather than being coated. I want some good metal drilling bits, but I won't invest in cobalt if I can't resharpen them w/ a Drill Doctor. Please give a reference, if you can, as well as any personal experience w/ good bits.
Well so far I've got one answer either way, but neither with a source to corroborate. At least I'm getting some other good info.

Drill Doctor may not be optimal, but I can't see myself trying to sharpen smaller bits manually with a grinder.

i have to drill or bore a 1 3/16 inch round hole (yes i said a 1 and 3/16 inch round hole)2 inchs deep into hard steel.i can not cut it with a torch.i been looking for titanium drill bits that are 1 3/16 round or larger and i can't find any drill bits that size, that are made for drilling into hard steel.

i looked all over locally and online.but i don't know exactly what i should be looking for?or useing to drill thru the steel.
i need to bore a 1 3/16 hole into a 7 inch round 20 pound gear 2 inchs thick hard steel after that the gear needs to be welded to a 1 3/16 or 1 1/8 drive shaft.this part goes to a engine.i talked to some welding shop and thay might do the job.
also my step dad works for csx and he has bits the size i need, but there shop drill press is broke.
it's made out off hardend pressed steel i think. its just said on the gear and box hardend steel gear.the gear allready has a hole in the center 3/4" all the way thru but i need the hole to be bigger to fit on the drive shaft.

What is a good brand for titanium drill bits?

Not plated, like full titanium. Need both for drills bits and phillip bits. I tried dewalt brands for both and it seems like its plated. after the gold paint disappears it looks like regular bits.

Drill bits keep breaking?

I have a stripped screw head and am trying to drill a hole in it so I can use a screw extractor. I've used a titanium and a cobalt drill bit, but both have broken. They don't seem to be making much of a hole. What am I doing wrong? What speed should I use?

cobalt metal drill bits ?

What is the best make metal cobalt drill bits? I`m drilling through 4mm angle iron which has just dulled 4 new bits, slow speed with water to cool. I`ve tried Black & Decker which were useless and Bosh titanium which also failed . I`ve quite a few holes left to drill so need a really good quality bit that will not dull too quickly

I am drilling through 1/4 inch thick steel using titanium bits. I have a lot of holes to make but the bits keep getting dull. Or is there another way I can go about it or tool to use

Drill bits for Metal?

What's the best type of drill bit to use when drilling into heavy guage metal, like bolts? I'm looking for paticular answers regarding Titanium, Cobalt.

Is cobalt really worth the extra expensive or is titanium or high speed steel just as good?

Should we build a lunar settlement?

Construction of a lunar settlement has been the subject of intense research since the 90's. Engineers from all backgrounds, but notably Civil and Chemical engineering, have been involved all along.

The moon presents a strategic waypoint between Mars. It's a good refueling point, due to its location and low escape velocity. It's a vast mineral resource, rich in Oxygen and Iron and Titanium - all of which can be extracted from the soil and processed for use. The moon is also rich in Deuterium, which can be used to produce clean nuclear energy.

Current technological challenges seem more mundane than extraordinary. With no water, what can we use instead of concrete? The soil compact as it is - and it is extremely compact - how can we dig and drill, and build foundations? With the incredibly fine lunar dust, how can we protect machinery everytime a shuttle lands or takes off?

So, the question is, given our current condition, should we construct on the moon?
